Prof. Raffaele Ferri MD

Raffaele Ferri received his MD in 1981 from the Catholic University of Rome (Italy) where he also received the specialization in Neurology in 1985.

Dr. Ferri is the scientific Director of the Oasi Research Institute - IRCCS in Troina (Italy), and chairs its Sleep Research Centre. Dr. Ferri has been involved in clinical research and care for decades, first at the Catholic University in Rome and then at the Oasi Research Institute.

Dr. Ferri’s specific areas of interest cover also the description, analysis and understanding of various aspects of human sleep biosignals, by means of computer analysis which he has applied to different areas (CAP; PLMS; RSWA, etc.) both for elucidating their neurophysiological mechanisms and for their automatic quantification. Dr. Ferri is deeply involved in the study of sleep neurophysiology of restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and REM sleep behavior disorder. Dr. Ferri has also a special interest in the analysis of pediatric sleep, with particular attention to sleep in subjects with neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Ferri has also been involved in the scientific study of the neurophysiological aspects of Alzheimer disease and other dementias and is has been for years Head of a Department specifically devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. For this reason, he has collaborated or leaded different research activities also in this field.  Dr. Ferri has published >450 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, in addition to book chapters and abstracts. He acts as an Associate Editor for Sleep, PLOS One, and International Journal of Psychophysiology.

Dr. Ferri is the current President of the Associazione Scientifica Italiana per la Ricerca e l'Educazione nella Medicina del Sonno (ASSIREM), Past-President of the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS), and Member-at-large of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG); he has been Secretary and then Vice-President of the European Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (EURLSSG). Dr. Ferri has been member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) and also a member of the didactic committee of the same organization, involved in the organization of the annual education course in Sleep Medicine. Dr. Ferri has been, for years, an active member of the Italian Society of Psychophysiology being a member of its Board of Directors for more than 10 years and its representative for the Federation of the European Psychophysiology Societies for which Dr. Ferri has also been Secretary.
